There are plenty of guides to cocktails inspired by books and movies, but Cocktails of the Movies is distinctive in that its drink list isn’t just derived from puns on the films’ titles or even mere thematic connections。 These are the drinks the characters are actually seen sipping, so the book amounts to a cultural history of cocktails。In some cases, the drinks are famous enough that they didn’t need any cinematic boost, though it took some impressively close observation for Francis to deduce t There are plenty of guides to cocktails inspired by books and movies, but Cocktails of the Movies is distinctive in that its drink list isn’t just derived from puns on the films’ titles or even mere thematic connections。 These are the drinks the characters are actually seen sipping, so the book amounts to a cultural history of cocktails。In some cases, the drinks are famous enough that they didn’t need any cinematic boost, though it took some impressively close observation for Francis to deduce that the martini Jack Nicholson sips in Batman (1989) is “wet,” with a two-to-one ratio of gin to vermouth。 In other cases, it was the movies that made the drinks iconic: for example, the Dude’s signature white Russian in The Big Lebowski (1998)。 In the belated 2008 film adaptation of Sex and the City, Francis reminds us, the middle-aged characters toast the cosmos they popularized in their HBO days。The book’s publication is timely, now that we’re all looking for ways to add a little excitement to watching yet another piece of streaming content。 At your next virtual movie marathon, why not add some flamed zest to that old fashioned you’re creating to drink along with Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love (2011), or wake yourself up with a jolt by shooting an amber moon over brunch along with Sir John Gielgud in Murder on the Orient Express (1974)? While you’re riding the rails and cracking some eggs, you can also make a gin Alexander to warm your spirits as Bing Crosby and company sing about snow in White Christmas (1954)。I reviewed Cocktails of the Movies for The Tangential。 。。。more

File this review under, "Never judge a book by the cover。" The illustrations in this recipe book will just knock your socks off。 Every cocktail gets a full treatment-story, illustration and step by step recipe。 I'd give this one 6 stars if I could。 Know anyone "setting up house?" This would be the perfect housewarming gift for anyone who enjoys a libation with a story, or anyone with an appreciation for adult illustration。 Wish it didn't belong to the library。 File this review under, "Never judge a book by the cover。" The illustrations in this recipe book will just knock your socks off。 Every cocktail gets a full treatment-story, illustration and step by step recipe。 I'd give this one 6 stars if I could。 Know anyone "setting up house?" This book brings together three of my favorite hobbies - books, movies and cocktails。 This would be an excellent book club read。。。as members could master their favorite drink and act out the name of the movie it represents。 Hmmm, perhaps this is the theme of my next dinner party。 Happy reading。。。with a delicious alcoholic beverage。

„Cocktails of the Movies“ made by Will Francis and Stacey Marsh is one of those books you will be forced to first browse through until the end before actually start them reading。Hollywood has had a lifelong love affair with cocktails。 During the 100 years since the movie industry first became established in a Los Angeles valley, the mixed drink has been a central device in the visual language of film。 Due to that reason these two talented young authors decided to present 64 cocktails seen in the „Cocktails of the Movies“ made by Will Francis and Stacey Marsh is one of those books you will be forced to first browse through until the end before actually start them reading。Hollywood has had a lifelong love affair with cocktails。 During the 100 years since the movie industry first became established in a Los Angeles valley, the mixed drink has been a central device in the visual language of film。 Due to that reason these two talented young authors decided to present 64 cocktails seen in the known movies through the history – listing the ingredients and preparation recipes together with the main actor caricature of particular movie。The book is structured in a way to encourage chance encounters with drinks reader may not has previously considered。 The book is simply ordered alphabetically by cocktail, without sections or chapters。 Also it is important to emphasize the vast majority of recipes are easy to make, with the basic ingredients recommended in the book beginning。As authors nicely wrote – “The greatest achievements come through simple means, and cocktails are no exception。 To create fine cocktails at home one only needs a few good-quality tools, which are easily obtainable online or from specialist shops”。 Therefore, the authors are going to help reader with the list of all required things (with cute pictures, of course) that would help one becoming a star at the bar。 And beside wealth of great information, this book shines when it comes to great design and small details that will force you to flip the pages until the very end。 Not once。Overall, this is very interesting, charming and beautifully designed book that will keep you occupied for some time and I was kind of sad to have it only in e-book format - because this is the kind of book you will show your friends and family, going through it together, recalling the movies, actors and cocktails。I was given a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of unbiased review, while all the presented information is based on my impressions。 。。。more
